Betty and her older brother lived with their parents on a cotton farm about half-way between Amherst and Sudan, about fifty miles northwest of Lubbock, and close to the center of the Texas Panhandle (the part of Texas that sticks up). Living on the farm had its blessings, such as space, land, sky, and seeing stars at night. The negative points were distance from grocery stores, school, church, and friends.
Betty's mother saw to it that her daughter had piano lessons, which meant driving her to the piano studio every week for eight years until Betty had her driver's license. Betty loved playing piano and singing. She was never lonely with music as her best friend. From the time she was eight years old, she was singing specials in church. When she was about twelve, she began playing piano in church, too.

Betty also loved to read. Once, she kept a record of the books she read in June, July, and August. The list included twenty-seven novels.
After high-school graduation, Betty went to university to continue her studies in music. A year later, she dropped out of school to have a family. One son and one daughter later, Betty returned to university to continue her music education. After graduation, Betty moved to Borger, TX, where she taught general music, choir, guitar, and recorders for twenty-three years.
Many have asked how the idea of the glops came about. Elayne's older sister needed help with a college assignment. Elayne, 14 years old at the time, helped her sister by quickly writing a short story about a funny, inquisitive little creature. About twenty-five years later, Elayne's mother, Betty, was looking in some files and found the short story. Betty had an idea, but what would Elayne think? "Go for it, Mom," she said. That was when Betty expanded the story and published it.
